Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas, which became the last bastion for slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army. Jun 13, 2023. Texas waited two years before telling the slaves they had been freed!
Juneteenth Independence Day = Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.” You may also see a red, black, and green flag being waved on Juneteenth; it's the Pan-African flag, which dates back to 1920.
